However, the social aspects of keeping such a bird are quite complicated…this is a species best reserved for experienced hobbyists.

Its basic needs are similar to those of related large parrots – a healthful diet, full spectrum light and a large cage or outdoor aviary. The sulphur-crested cockatoo’s sizable brain and body renders it a wonderful but demanding pet. On the other hand, the important role of this species in consuming the seeds of harmful weeds and the larvae of crop-feeding insects is well documented. The clever “raiding parties”, always forewarned of danger by “scouts”, are rarely caught in the act. They also have been known to ravage harvested grain by ripping into bags held at storage sites. It is difficult for non-Australians to imagine these fabulous birds in the role of “crop pest”, but a flock of several hundred descending upon a field can be devastating. Consequently, the sentinel system has not been developed by this segment of the population. In northern Australia, sulphur-crested cockatoos usually feed in trees at forest edges, where they are less vulnerable to predators than are ground-feeding birds. These individuals keep watch for danger, rising high into the air and screaming as a warning to the flock. In eastern Australia, where flocks feed in open country on the ground, sentries are always posted in nearby trees. Interestingly, cockatoos living in different habitats show widely varying defensive adaptations. Favored roosting sites remain in use for decades, even if changes in food availability necessitate long-distance flights. These cockatoos always live within flying distance of water, but otherwise occupy a range of habitats, including forest, open woodlands, brushy savannas and farms. Long-collected as a pet, it has been introduced and breeds in the wild on New Zealand, Palau and Indonesia’s Ceramlaut and Goramlaut Islands. Sulphur-crested cockatoos range along Australia’s north-central coast and throughout the eastern third of the continent and on New Guinea, its offshore islands and Aru Island. However, its natural history is less in the spotlight, and holds some interesting surprises.

It is also one of the most intelligent, and as such has become well known to TV and movie viewers the world over as an “actor”. Hollow eucalypt logs are best suited for nest boxes and should be approximately 30-40 cm in internal diameter and about 1m in length. The magnificent sulphur-crested cockatoo ( Cacatua galerita) is one of the most sought after of all bird pets.

Similarly, the frame should be constructed of steel to avoid the birds chewing the structure away. The aviary wire should be a heavy-duty grade, as cockatoos can easily chew holes through lighter grade wire. The best breeding results are achieved when one pair per aviary is kept. Due to its highly contagious nature to other parrot species, it is advisable to avoid any bird suspected of having this condition.Ĭockatoos generally require an aviary no less than four to six metres long by one to two metres wide. The beak is also affected and becomes fragile and does not repair itself. PBFD is chronic and incurable and results in poor feather growth and ultimately, complete feather loss. The black cockatoos are less susceptible to this disease. Psittacine beak and feather disease (Circovirus infection or PBFD) is a problem that is frequently encountered in the white cockatoo species. For this reason, cockatoos can be a challenging bird to keep and therefore require a committed owner who is willing to provide continuing obedience training. These friendly birds are good talkers but also possess the ability to make loud screaming noises. Cockatoos deprived of this affection may become loud and develop unwanted behaviours. They have great characters, a "cuddly" nature and enjoy physical interaction with their owner. With a lifespan of up to 120 years with some cockatoo species, these birds make wonderful life long friends. However, these birds require an extremely dedicated owner who is willing to provide significant and meaningful attention to this highly intelligent species.

Hand reared male Red Tailed Black Cockatoos are generally less prone to bite and make better pets, especially for younger owners, for this reason.

The strong, heavy beak of the cockatoo is used to crack large seeds but can also produce a powerful and destructive bite. The most obvious external feature of any cockatoo is the erectile crest that raises immediately after alighting and when alarmed or excited.
